Amazon awarded patent for smartphone “damage avoidance system”. The patent describes a system able to use embedded sensors such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and even a laser range finder in an electronic device to sense and calculate risks of damage to the device: If the risk of damage to the device exceeds a threshold, a protection system is activated to reduce or substantially eliminate damage to the device. Protection systems covered in the patent cover “propulsion elements” able to re-orientate a device in free fall (such as gas jets), absorbing structures or springs, and even airbags. The patent was filed in 2010 and lists Amazon founder Jeff Bezos as an inventor.
