Google celebrates 37 years of breakout.

Google has slipped a small easter egg into their Image Search page in the form of a playable Breakout game, which was originally released in 1976.

To get access to the game, navigate to the Image Search page and type in “Atari Breakout”

Click below for an interesting backstory (tl;dr - Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak originally produced the prototype Pong game):

And if you haven’t seen it already, check out this epic 8 bit Post-It note animation, created over 11 months by the same person.

Video: Pong at the Philadelphia Circa Centre.

The game was set up using the lights on the 437 foot tall building on April 19. There’s a round two happening on April 24 from 8pm onwards, if you’re in the area.

The presence of the small crowd caused some technical problems for the team’s setup—while it had apparently worked fine during testing, the 4G hotspot’s connection became overloaded. All of the code being transmitted from the computer to the building looks relatively light, but since all of it is on the computer it needs a stable, consistent connection to run smoothly, and the first game (between Lee and Gerard Sweeney, the realty company’s CEO) was rendered unplayable about halfway through because of lag.

After a few minutes of “live hacking,” as Lee’s team referred to it, things smoothed out, and the game became more responsive as the evening went on.

The team behind it already has plans for future games of snake and Tetris.

From the maker:

This stop motion tribute to my 2 favorite old school arcade games is based on actual recorded game footage. The recordings were printed out, one frame at a time, and transferred by hand to various walls around my office floor using thousands of Post-It Notes. The process consumed weekends and holidays for the past 11 months. Changing background scenery was masked out and replaced with 1 consistent frame throughout the animation, producing an eerie stillness amid the moving images on the walls.

Happy Easter everyone!
After an Easter egg hunt (for the kids, ya know) I did a little Chaos Emerald hunting myself. Made it all the way to the final level before losing all my lives.
The game is Sonic The Hedgehog on Sega Master System. It has Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in.
In the background is a Sega Mega Drive (known as the Sega Genesis in the US). I don’t currently have any games for it but had it out to borrow its controller for the Master System.

Video: Activision R&D shows off realistic 3D characters.

This demo shows what can be achieved on current generation Geoforce GTX 680 graphics cards.

The rendering techniques, as well as the animation pipeline are being presented at GDC 2013, “Next Generation Character Rendering” on March 27.
The original high resolution data was acquired from Light Stage Facial Scanning and Performance Capture by USC Institute for Creative Technologies, then converted to a 70 bones rig, while preserving the high frequency detail in diffuse, normal and displacement composite maps.
It is being rendered in a DirectX11 environment, using advanced techniques to faithfully represent the character’s skin and eyes.
